16 Ways to Achieve Weight Loss or Weight Maintenance Over The Holidays
The holidays are here, and it’s a time for fun gatherings with family and friends. Of course, that involves food and drink. We enjoy special foods as well as our company. But the extra pounds can creep up in the process.
Here are some ways to maintain your weight amidst the festivities, while still enjoying yourself. Who knows, you may even end up losing weight! Please remember to follow Covid guidelines so your holidays are safe.
1.Fill up on veggies and lean protein: That will leave less room for sweets and rich foods
2. Use the half plate rule: Fill half your plate with fruits and veggies: if you eat these nutrient-dense foods, you will get too full to eat a lot of the ‘other stuff’
3. Chew each bite of food 32 times: You will reach satiety sooner and digest your food better
4. Eat before going to parties: Eat a good meal at home and then just nibble a bit at the party
5. Practice breathing and relaxation: The calmer and more grounded you are, the better will be your food choices
6. Exercise regularly: That will help you burn up those extra calories and keep your body and mind in balance
7. Pace yourself with the slowest eater: You will feel fuller sooner and enjoy your food more
8. Sit far away from the serving table: That way you will think twice before going back for more
9. Put home goodies in serving-size zip lock bags: You will be more likely to stick to one small portion
10. Put home goodies in hard-to-find places, as back of refrigerator shelf or a top cabinet: Out of sight, out of mind
11. Give away food gifts: If food is not in the house, you won’t eat it!
12. Serve yourself on a smaller plate and cup: You will be more likely to eat less
13. Eat mindfully and enjoy what you eat: Satiety comes from paying attention to what you eat
14. Use a food trade-off: i.e.: I can only eat dessert if I’ve exercised that day
15. Whenever possible, make eating your sole activity: You will become aware of exactly what you are putting in your mouth
16. Cut down on your eating zones (the places where you eat): Choose a designated eating space like a dining room table, where you can pay attention and really enjoy your food and see how it is affecting you
