In modern times, this simple daily fast is not very popular. Nighttime snacking is very popular. Often people are not hungry when they snack, but eating after dinner becomes a form of entertainment, a reward for a hard day of work, a way to relax, or a way to avoid uncomfortable feelings that may come up when activity level goes down. It might also have become an evening ritual that goes with TV watching. Sometimes people really get hungry again later at night, and can’t fall asleep unless they have a snack.

How can we just not eat after dinner?

  • Eat enough at dinner so you are sated and full enough to go until the next day.
  • Chew food well so it keeps you full longer.
  • Buy some herbal teas for a satisfying treat at night.
  • Avoid activities that have an association with snacking, like TV watching. One of my clients lost 15 pounds in an 8-week group by just not watching TV.
  • Find non-food rewards such as soaking in a hot tub, reading a good book, taking a walk, or whatever else works for you.
  • Recall how good you’ve felt when you’ve gone to bed with an empty stomach, and how you’re naturally losing weight by not eating again after dinner.
  • Go to bed earlier. Once 10 pm comes around, you are much more likely to get hungry again and be looking for something to eat.
